Early last month, the first title from Striking Distance Studios, The Callisto protocol, launched to middling reviews. A relatively new studio led by Dead Space creator Glen Schofield, this first title of the company was clearly set up to be quite big, with Geoff Keighley giving it a big push at both Summer Games Fest last year, and at The Game Awards in 2020 where the game debuted. Except things haven’t exactly gone to plan, as according to MK-Odyssey, the game hasn’t sold quite as well as expected....

Originally set for a June 21 release, developer Fntastic revealed the switch to Unreal Engine 5 and the delay to IGN via a statement. “Millions of people have added The Day Before to their wishlist, making The Day Before one of the most anticipated games in the world, reads the statement. “Feeling and understanding the great responsibility that we face, with enormous gratitude in our hearts, were pleased to announce that The Day Before is switching to the new Unreal Engine 5 technology!...

Sony announced it would be buying Bungie for a whopping sum of $3.6 billion earlier this year, which has obviously drawn the attention of the FTC. According to The Information (paywalled, via PC Gamer), the FTC has launched an “in-depth investigation” of the deal. The report states that the investigation started towards the end of April, and it’s supposedly focused on the fact that Sony might make Bungie games, such as the Destiny series, exclusive to PlayStation consoles....

Revealed earlier this week, The Finals is a squad-based, free-to-play multiplayer shooter with inspiration from films like last year’s breakout hit Squid Game, and dystopian classic The Running Man. The first trailer gives off an impressive first look, with what looks to be completely destructible environments, and enemies that burst into coins when you take them down. And you can already sign up to take part in the game’s playtest, though the closed alpha is only running until tomorrow, October 3....

Rumours about the direction of the next Battlefield often pop up a few months before the games are due for a reveal. This time, the year-old rumour, that DICE was working on a Battlefield 3 remaster to hold people over until the next mainline entry, appears to have morphed into a different rumour: that DICE is instead taking inspiration from Battlefield 3 in building the next game. I am not really here to comment on the validity or even likelihood of the rumour itself, but it got me thinking about a particular trait of Battlefield 3 that ended up defining it for me, and one I hope DICE adopts with Battlefield 6, regardless of any other mechanical or design similarities there may be....

The company announced during its Q3 call to investors The Outer Worlds has shipped over 2 million units to date, significantly exceeding Take-Two’s expectations. During its Q2 report in November, the company said the game had exceeded expectations but didn’t provide any figures. Released in late-October on PC, PS4 and Xbox One, the game was slated to release for Switch on March 6, but worries over the coronavirus have caused the game to be delayed....

Well, that changed at Gamescom Opening Night Live. Red Barrels revealed a brand-new closed beta trailer for the game, which takes us back to a more familiar setting than that of the lacklustre Outlast 2. No, it’s not Mount Massive Asylum. Instead, The Outlast Trials takes us to Sunshine Orphanage which seems to promise the same claustrophobia and endless corridors to get lost in. It appears we’ll also even be able to explore an amusement park and various underground streets as we once again try to get to the bottom of Murkoff Corporations cruel experiments....

It drops us into the new town of Evergreen Harbor, and from the map alone you’ll see the new eco footprint mode - the state of environmental effect every neighbourhood in the town is at. Evergreen Harbor comprises a few different neighbourhoods; Conifer Station, Grim’s Quarry, and Port Promise. Each of these neighborhoods is at a different level of eco-ness - Conifer Station is neutral, Grim’s Quarry is green, and Port Promise is industrial....

Alongside the new skin tones in The Sims 4, you can expect a customization slider and new makeup swatches. You can also expect three improved base game hairstyles and a main menu makeover. The update has been in the works for a while, as Maxis promised over the summer it was in the works. “Inclusivity is at the core of the franchise, and we understand that right now we aren’t living up to that promise,” executive producer Lyndsay Pearson said at the time, promising more skin tones were coming alongside updates to the current tones available....

The Witcher and Cyberpunk developer and publisher CD Projekt has announced the financial results [PDF] for 2019. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was a major contributor to the company’s revenue in 2019. During that year, sales of the game across all platforms came close to The Witcher 3’s all-time high at its launch back in 2015. Though specific figures weren’t mentioned, the document reveals that sales in 2019 were around 7 million, compared to 9....

The game is slated to come to Steam on February 15, but according to the official Metro Exodus Twitter account, it will not be released on GOG “in the immediate future.” When asked by a Twitter user if the game would eventually see a release on GOG, they received the following reply: To see this content please enable targeting cookies. The character customisation options on offer in Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands are arguably an improvement on prior games. Not only are there multiple unique classes to pick from, you later get to combine classes, and you can attribute stats to your character to craft a hero fit to take on the Dragon Lord. You can respec your character at any point, so how you distribute your attributes initially isn’t so important; it’s merely something to think about (I’ll delve into those a little more at the end of this guide)....

The news comes from Gayming, who recently published a piece explaining how Lara and Sam were supposed to be together. Sam, who was introduced in 2013’s Tomb Raider, is Lara’s best friend - and, as pointed out in the Gayming piece, the rainbow that appears above their heads at the end of the game is not exactly subtle. The latest Simulacrum to be added to the roster of playable AIs, and the first introduced since the game’s global launch, Cobalt-B wields a flaming revolver and dons cute blue pigtails with sunglasses. With her character art shrouded in flames, you just know she’s here to undoubtedly cause some trouble across Aida. Cobalt-B is a mechanical engineer on the Hykros weapon development team, and she’s said to have an instinct for creating highly effective weapons....

Ubisoft recently revealed the pricing model for the Trackmania remake. The base game is going to be free, but things like full access to the track creator cost $10 per year. There’s even a $30-per-year tier that unlocks exclusive skins, and entry into racing leagues. This is the definition of a subscription model, but the publisher sees it differently. Following some negative feedback on Reddit and the official forums, a representative from developer Ubisoft Nadeo explained that, actually, Trackmania’s model is not a subscription - you just pay for the same thing several times....

Yesterday, we heard an update on the status of the long-awaited crossover game Tekken X Street Fighter. Harada made comments on his YouTube series Harada’s Bar that stated the game was dead, and development ceased. It turns out these weren’t quite accurate, though. Whilst the English language subtitles said “development stopped but we got about 30 percent done” and “we wanted to show it, but the project died”, it turns out that’s not exactly what Harada meant....

Last week’s Back 4 Blood closed beta has been a big hit among my group of friends. We’re not alone in this, either, as nearly 100,000 players logged in to play at the same time on Steam at its peak. That record has already been broken by the open beta, live now. I was particularly impressed with the depth the deck building system brings to Back 4 Blood. It elevates the game from a simple, good co-op shooter you enjoy playing, to one you’re going to be thinking about when you’re not playing....
